The Celebration of Indigenous and their Culture
Every October, we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Month in the Philippines. This year, the theme is: “Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan at Parangalana,” which means “Valuing, Nurturing, and Honoring Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Knowledge.”
This month helps us remember and respect the Indigenous Peoples (IPs) in our country. These are the people who have lived in the Philippines long before modern cities were built. They have their own languages, traditions, and ways of living that are special and important in our history.
The Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) was created 27 years ago to protect the rights of Indigenous Peoples. It helps ensure that they have the right to live in their own land, use their resources, and practice their culture without fear of being harmed or forgotten.
During National Indigenous Peoples Month, we learn about the different Indigenous groups in the Philippines and the wisdom they hold. For example, their knowledge of nature, farming, and healing plants is very important to protecting our environment. By celebrating their culture, we can also help protect their rights, making sure that they are not being left out.
We can show respect for Indigenous Peoples by learning about their culture, language, and traditions. We can also support laws that protect their rights and make sure they are treated fairly. By valuing and honoring the Indigenous Peoples and their knowledge, we make the Philippines a better place for everyone.
